Introduction

1001 movies you must see before you die. Must I? Let's see.

My name is Dagmar and I am from Czech Republic. I have a bachelor's degree in screenwriting. I study movies. I watch movies. I write about movies. I kind of mention movies a lot. I even cross stitch things I like in movies. My views on cinema could be described as peculiar. My views on the "1001 movies" list as complicated. It happens a lot that I get the feeling it wasn't that necessary to see some particular movies. Sometimes I'm really grateful I saw them. And there are also times when I don't watch any new movies for six months straight. And they keep adding new movies every damn year so I might have to never die to watch them all.

What's the score right now?
606/1245 - That's 639 left to see.
I started this experiment on July 3rd 2009 and the latest update was made on April 19th 2023.

Pandora's Box (1929)

Die Büchse der Pandora
Germany
directed by: Georg Wilhelm Pabst
written by: Ladislaus Vajda + Frank Wedekind (book)
starring: Louise Brooks, Fritz Kortner, Francis Lederer
seen: 26th November, 2009, comment: 10th June, 2017

This film represents a rather unbalanced mix of blunt uncompromising and lengthy naivety. I guess this is how "destructive feminity" looks like when it's completely imagined by men. Up untill the courtroom scene Pabst presents the audience with beautifully and eloquently framed cruel theatre that would very well work without any additional intertitles. Then the genre/presentation shifts into some weirdly overcomplicated soap opera in an underground casino, where a lot of things sort of "transpire", but I think that this entire passage could be removed without any harm to the overall story and it would also lead to a much better, cleaner film. And the closing London chapter goes back to being great, mean, expressive and ultimately cinematic way of finishing what the director started in opening parts of the film.

So what I'm saying is that the film craft was executed splendidly, but the process of adapting the book story arc to a film story arc - not so much.

"It's strange how you can get booze on credit... but not bread."

District 9 (2009)

South African Republic/USA/New Zealand/Canada
directed by: Neill Blomkamp

written by: Neill Blomkamp, Terri Tatchell
starring: Sharlto Copley, David James, Jason Cope
seen: 3rd October, 2009 - comment: 18th August, 2017

Hmm, since seing this film for the first time back in 2009 my perspective really did change. I was suspicious it could. The telling cluess were hidden in the original comment: not only it contained misspelled words on purpose, it also had phrases like "a promising topic butchered", "absolutely unconvincing", "why is a docu-approach ended with a giant shoot-out" and "no, simply no". Today I only need to take one look at a prawn dad loving his prawn son and my stone cold heart melts and I am capable of a critical thought about the film's theme and its means of turning it into a viable story.

It's still kind of too loud, shouty and explosy to really touch me in my heart, but who am I to criticise someone's postmodern cross-breeding of genres and giant shoot-outs when it leadst to an objectively assessable film goodness, perhaps even clever and cleverly done? A big change also manifests itself in me now finding Sharlto Copley adorable enought for respecting him as the main hero. Although I wouldn't mind for his character to show some more development sooner that at the last possible moment.

In conclusion, I am sorry for being prejudiced when I saw this earlier, and if you kids ever get the sequel made, don't let it be rubbish.

Collateral (2004)

USA
directed by: Michael Mann

written by: Stuart Beattie
starring: Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett Smith
seen on 29th August, 2009

-"Man, I don't know any Rwandans." -"You don't know the guy in the trunk, either."

Flavourless. Odourless. What was it about? I remember the expressionless face of Tom Cruise. I also remember him having it in films where he doesn't play expressionless people. Educated against his will. Who - the viewer, the driver. Night city? Nightmare.

The Thin Red Line (1998)

USA
directed by: Terrence Malick
written by: Terrence Malick + James Jones (book)
starring: Sean Penn, Adrien Brody, James Caviezel, Ben Chaplin
seen: 23rd August, 2009 - comment: 8th April, 2017

I've seen three films by Terrence Malick so far and I have to say I don't think his distinct style always sets him apart in a good way. What puzzles me the most about The Thin Red Line is the discrepancy between the images and the voiceover. I consider Malick to be a master of characterising each soldier  as an individual. He shows us a few intimate details from their lives and suddenly it's a film about soldiers and not about war and that is beautiful. (And Spielberg might as well suck it, that needs to be said.) But when they voice their thoughts out loud, they all seem to be thinking alike. It's the screenwriter talking rather than them, their personalities slowly fade away and that irritates me. And also confuses me and stops me from forming a connection with them and the film. Some of the soliders stand out with their narration (like Adrien Brody), but those are mostly minor characters and  their monologues sadly come only after I've been worn out by Penn, Caviezel and Chaplin mumbling the same over and over for what seems like endless hours. The accompanying music doesn't help either - I was dying to hear any piercings sounds (other than gunshots) to break the monotonous sound atmosphere.

I understand that even the final three-hour lenght is a result of Malick extremely shortening his original vision. And I am known to point out the failure of giving proper attention to emotion procesing on screen in various other films. So how come I'm contemplating if cutting some scenes could make The Thin Red Line better in my eyes? Let's take a look on Ben Chaplin and his wife. In his major flashbacks we got to see at least 1. one amorous visit to a pier at sunset 2. the wife walking into the sea looking all enigmatic and him following her 3. them making love at home with blinds closed and 4. him watching her on a swing smiling joyfully. If one or more of those episodes didn't make it to the final cut, how much would the film be affected? Would it be a different film? Would it lose its uniqueness or gain momentum? I don't know. But I'm sure that in its current state it's too self-absorbed for my taste and the constant (aestethically pleasing, but story-wise redundant) digression makes me crazy. I admire the brain that leads the eye of the camera, but I'm not feeling the story in front of it.

These are the scenes that I found truly impressive: Jared Leto watching the light changing over the landscape. Matt Doran touching the mimosa plant. One little bird hatching on the battlefield. James Caviezel seeing the face of a man burried in the earth. What do the scenes have in common? There's no need for speech, they are articulate on their own. I'd like more of that, please.

Memento (2000)

USA
directed by: Christopher Nolan
written by: Christopher Nolan + Jonathan Nolan (short story)
starring: Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano
seen: 17th August, 2009 - comment upgraded: 8th March, 2018

Memento is so formally adorable I am completely hesitant to give it five stars out of five. I was thinking what I liked the most about the film I came to the conclusion that it was its usage of Guy Pearce. I'm not sure I've ever seen him act properly, but here the magic of Nolan almost makes you think he is an A-list actor. And Carrie-Anne is being such a diabolical broad it makes me wonder why don't we get to see her more on the silver screen. (But I am writing that in retrospect and it's true she appeared in quite a few interesting projects in the early 2000s.)

"Oh, I'm chasing this guy. (Bang, bang.) No... he's chasing me." - And that sums it up. I am not watching the film. It is watching me.

Once (2006)

Ireland
written and directed by: John Carney

starring: Glen Hansard, Markéta Irglová, Geoff Minogue
seen on 10th August, 2009

I have trouble getting this film. The only interesting thing in the film music wise was the Ramones poster on Glen's door, I really can't stand the type of music the protagonists were making. And the rest of the "film stuff" was too artificial to make me see anything else but non actors non acting. No delicate story for me.

Magnolia (1999)

USA
written and directed by: Paul Thomas Anderson

starring: Julianne Moore, William H. Macy, John C. Reilly, Tom Cruise
seen on 24th July, 2009

-"I'm quietly judging you."

Well, he says that, but he can be thinking about a hot dog for all we know. And that's how I felt about the whole movie. The introduction was rather interesting, some moments I also liked, but "the thought", which I had trouble even identifying in the giant mass of struggling policemen and hurt children, was too tainted by pathos and sentiment and god knows what, and a lot of the motives were used more than once, and I don't like that either. One old guy forced by the approaching exitus to be hypocritically honest should be enough, no need to put more of them in one film.

I guess that is my judgment: too many ingredients were used. I'd rather eat something else than to chew through this again to be told that people tend to be nasty to each other and that they should try to be nicer instead. It reminded me a lot of Donnie Darko, with the exception that Darko felt way more organic in its chaos.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)

USA
directed by: Larry Charles
written by: Peter Baynham, Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines
starring: Sacha Baron Cohen, Ken Davitian, Luenell
seen: 22nd July, 2009

Well, I don't know, I wouldn't say I'm strait-laced when it comes to film, but what is too much is too much. Or rather when there's too little, it's not enough for me to laugh. The film as a whole seems half-baked (one bear's head in a fridge does not make a rushed concept good). It's too confident: it lays one gag after another and has no other plan than that, it keeps everything so simple that it almost looks like it's not trying at all.

Maybe my assumption is wrong and it's not a comedy, just an absurd, surrealist-ish skit about human stupidity. It doesn't generate amusement in me. And I wouldn't say that it's perverse or distasteful (as some say that it is). I would say that it's mostly just plain sad like a little pitiful Borat in his red pyjamas in an ice cream truck in the middle of a neglected meadow after his dreams were shattered.

All and all, my ego refuses to let its guards down before this fake Kazakh. And I really expected him to wear the green swimsuit a bit longer since it's in every promo picture ever.

There Will Be Blood (2007)

USA
written and directed by: Paul Thomas Anderson
starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, Ciarán Hinds
seen: 21st July, 2009

The doors of perception opened by the film's soundtrack showed me far more interesting landscapes than the film itself, although I must admit it can be a bit difficult to separate the influence of one ingredient from another.

Day-Lewis is not the type of actor whose style I would find appealing. In fact, my opinion of him is balancing between "I don't care at all" and "I find him strangely annoying". His character is a man that stops at nothing - a philosophy I don't understand and the thought of those adhering to it running around among us makes me scared. Paul Dano is a different story. His appearance always makes me curious about what's about to come to light. His psychotic fanatic is a dexterous piece of work and I find the decision to confront him with DDL's intimidating presence both rather clever and not so clever as he appears to be too overpowered, especially in the later stages of life (where it really matters).

But the film provoked me enough to leave with a revelation: I don't enjoy films with actors performing their hearts out the way the Academy likes to award Oscars for. I take delight in more stoic, inward-oriented performances. I'm glad Anderson helped me realize it. But there are exceptions for everything, of course.

Apocalypto (2006)

USA
directed by: Mel Gibson

written by: Mel Gibson, Farhad Safinia
starring: Rudy Youngblood, Jonathan Brewer, Dalia Hernández, Raoul Trujillo
seen: 20th July, 2009, comment reworked: 30th August, 2017

I wasn't sure I ever wanted to see anything else tainted by the craft of the mad blue eyed wonder after "The Passion of the Christ". But Native Americans are my long term love, stretching through all possible narrative arts and media. I've been serching for a proper A-list film I would approve of, especially because "The Last of the Mohicans" left me horrified and "Dances with wolves" only met some of my conditions. And in this way Apocalypto had me deeply pleased.

I am not an expert in history so I don't aspire to state how much of the movie is real (truth reflecting) and where did Gibson wondered into fantasy land. From my amateur point of view I can say that nothing in the film struck me as stupid or illogical. Mel's signature style of expressivity, pathos and black-and-whiteness is showing once more, but this time he uses it more precisely and has me completely hooked. The overall look of the film had me fascinated, as did all the natural performances of  (non)actors with the utterly charismatic Rudy Youngblood in the lead. His way of speaking with his eyes is something a lot of professionals should be jealous of.

Truth be told, I would never expeted Mel to come up with an amazing hero's journey about believing in oneself and the need of symbiosis with nature, but he did. I was also surprised and amused by him using the "deus ex machina" storytelling devise and hiding additional meanings behind it. The first instance of a higher power altering hero's fate is the solar eclipse. The eclipse saves him from a situation where he himself could do literally nothing. But it wasn't the hand of god who let him go, it was a calculated trick by the king and his closest to manipulate the mindless mass of subjects. The ruler knows very well that the eclipse is coming and when his benevolent gesture brings the sun back, his subjects have no other choice that to believe in his unlimited powers. The other touch of god from the machine is the ending itself. The arrival of Christians sways the attention of hunters and the hero can safely return to his family. But the educated viewer of course knows the horrors brought by european civilisation upon native populations and knows this happy ending isn't the end (let alone happy) and that from this point on the hero, his hunters or their king won't ever ever safe again.

Just like I looked up after "The Passion" what the Jewish community thinks abou it, I searched for reviews and articles with opinions from descendants of idigenous american inhabitans on Apocalypto. There were both positive and negative reactions I could understand. One reproach accused the film of intolerance because it supposedly portrays the Mayans as violent savages that can only be saved by whites from Europe. Maybe I cannot assess this completely objectively, but personally I find the reproach to be a bit unfair, or rather unsubstantiated. The film shows a wide spectrum of social classed from Mayan society and presents everybody simply as humans, not as an exotic attraction in a white story (and that's what "The Last of the Mohicans" does, gods of all religions damn that film). The white conquerors shown at the end are not assigned any attributes or qualities, positive or negative, there's no comment on their role, just that the hero decides not to approach them. And I sincerely hope that Mel did not intended them to be understood as saviours.

P.S.: From the first time I saw it, I thought that the figure on the poster is the main protagonist fleeing the harm's way, but it's Middle Eye, the cruelest of the head hunters and the main antagonist to our hero. Who would have thought.

The Lives of Others (2006)

Das Leben der Anderen
Germany
written and directed by: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
starring: Ulrich Mühe, Sebastian Koch, Martina Gedeck
seen: 6th July, 2009 - comment: 16th August, 2017

"Nein, es ist für mich." ♥♥♥ I'm trying to figure out if I'd admire this film as much as I do now if the main part wasn't portrayed by the biggest and most emotive eyes in the history of our universe, aka the eyes of Ulrich Mühe.

The film is cold and reserved, but I also read it as accuracy and self-awareness. And when you add the quiet thundering of the main leads with the ultimately charismatic Mühe in the center to the mix, I see an artwork that provokes no objections or wishes of additional changes in my mind.

It is a typical "Oscar-worthy" film, but it has some fairytale qualities and an elevating meaning as well, so I am truly crying, thank you and rest in peace, Mr. Mühe.

1001 movies you must see before you die

This is the expanded list of the most important films of history, as put together by Steven Jay Schneider with a collective of authors. A new edition of the book (and the list) comes out every year to reflect new creations and keep the list relevant. I keep adding their new additions to my list (and never remove those they decided to remove), therefore my list has way more that "just" 1001 entries. The links lead to my reviews of the films I've already seen. Keep in mind that I can be (and usually am) highly subjective - but my education in film-making and film history sometimes comes through as well.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)

USA
directed by: Mel Stuart
written by: David Seltzer, Roald Dahl + Roald Dahl (book)
starring: Gene Wilder, Jack Albertson, Roy Kinnear
seen on 1st July, comment updated on 21st March, 2019

-"What is this, Wonka? Some kind of funhouse?" -"Why? Are you having fun?"

The film certainly looks like the seventies and the musical numbers sure classify the film as the boring traditional American averageness, but it's probably the contrast between "the normal" and "the weird" that makes viewing of this film so extraordinary. The snarky opening search for golden tickets mocks humanity so effortlesly, it's beautiful to behold. I really loved the psychiatrist bit, and the talks with the computer, of course. Roald Dahl was said to complain that the film focuses too much on Wonka and too little on Charlie, and I, on the other hand, would say the film focuses too much on Charlie and too little on Wonka, because Gene Wilder is a god and who cares about the rest of it.

And this seems like a good moment for a swift turn into a comparison of two films, because I saw Burton's version of the Chocolate Factory first and I happen to like it, even though people mostly seem to hate it, at least according to what I read online. But it's a good starting point to notice different approaches on the part of film-makers decisions and what it means for the story. I've seen Burton's film get hate for being too silly and simplistic, but I would say it's undeniable that it showcases the advancement of screenwriting. Burton and his screenwriter August do make up a lot of stuff and chance significant details, but they do it to make a more compact and fully developed story that has a beginning, a middle part and a satisfying conclusion, and the maniacal sarcastic fantasy frames it all. Their film is inspired and supported by the book, but it's also quite different and can stand on its own. It also more inclines toward the child audience in the sense that almost no question is left unanswered and everything is explained.

Stuart and Seltzer would obviously like to make a similar radical leap, but they are too afraid to publicly distance themselves from the source material and they become stuck somewhere in between. Along with Wilder they create a brilliant modern character of Wonka and it just seems such a shame that he's trapped in this old-timey film with boring uninspired songs like the one sung by Charlie's mother in the beginning or that he has to interact with outdated performances like Jack Albertson's complete lack of self-awareness (and dare I say lack of humour at all). Wilder's performance is layered and nuanced, his face is both expressive and made of stone, he's radiating an incongruous aura of dignity, doing somersaults on the red carpet and having boat-based mental breakdowns without any context... Oh yes.

Any lover of the bizarre should be satisfied, but I would still campaign for some sort of a hybrid where we would get a Wilder-Wonka quiping Shakespeare and motivational quotes with some slam poetry sprinkled in without any explanation, but with the old-timey musical replaced by the more eclectic irony of Danny Elfman's music from the Burton version.

-"But Charlie, don't forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he always wanted." -"What happened?" -"He lived happily ever after."

Full Metal Jacket (1987)

United Kingdom/USA
written and directed by: Stanley Kubrick
starring: Matthew Modine, Vincent D'Onofrio, Adam Baldwin
seen on 30th June, 2009; commented on 29th November, 2020

-"I am... in a world... of shit."

I did not understand why he made the film of those two distinct halves when I was younger and saw the film for the first time. Today I feel everything is exactly where it's supposed to be, from the shaving of heads to Paint It Black. To me, this will always be the best film about Vietnam war, and even though I generally oppose the idea of those "best movies ever made" lists, Full Metal Jacket should be on all of them.

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

USA/United Kingdom
directed by: Stanley Kubrick
written by: Stanley Kubrick, Frederic Raphael + Arthur Schnitzler (book)
starring: Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Alan Cumming
seen: 18th June, 2009, additional comment: 22nd October, 2018

2009: This film takes a completely separate route (from my imaginary life travels, if that makes any sense). And I'm quite inclined to say nothing will ever bring us together. I don't feel like an adult just yet, but my concept of adulthood differs greatly from the vision provided by Kubrick here.

2018: Oh gosh darn it, I'm gonna have to watch it again in ten years time because I am still not experienced enough to understand what this film is about. (Let alone to define if it's done clumsily or masterfully.)

I am able to savor (more than before) the way Kubrick torments Cruise, but I mean literally the director and the actor, because I don't have a clue what the character is going through. The only thing (apart from the vague realization that I tend to forget at times that Nicole is capable of being an actress-goddess) that makes sense to me and can help me orient myself in the map of this film is the short étude performed so effortlessly by Alan Cumming: the between-the-lines expression of feelings that can never be reciprocated.

My confusion is best illustrated by the final dialogue, where I'm terribly bothered that while Nicole says "the important thing is we're awake now", Tom's expression on the other hand says that he's either never fallen asleep or that he'll never wake up, in short that he's learned nothing during his journey.
